As President of Smith Farms, Ltd. and Managing Partner at Caliber, he has been instrumental in growing his family’s agrarian legacy while making significant strides in real estate development across the Western United States.
Nathan’s agricultural journey is deeply rooted in his family’s history. Smith Farms, originally comprising 460 leased acres when he assumed leadership in 1999, has since expanded under his guidance to encompass over 30,000 acres. This expansion represents physical growth and a continuation of a farming tradition spanning five generations.
From a young age, Nathan was ingrained in his father and grandfather’s values of hard work and diligence on their grain and cattle ranch in Minot, ND. These lessons have been crucial as he navigated the complexities of modern farming, which involves much more than planting and harvesting. He has strategically acquired land, such as the recent purchase of 1,800 acres in Montana, and fostered key relationships with other landowners to facilitate this growth.
Nathan’s academic background in Agricultural Economics from North Dakota State University has equipped him with the skills necessary to enhance the business side of farming. Even as a high school student, he displayed entrepreneurial acumen by starting a business importing and reselling trucks from Canada. This early venture into business taught him the importance of spotting opportunities and acting decisively—an approach he carried into his farming operations.
